Distance Running Realities - Your coaching staff has years of experience as distance runners and coaches. Our training program is based on sound research and has taught us much by "trail and error" through our own training experiences. Personally I "cringe" sometimes when I hear advice that is "counterproductive" to the sport of distance running. Make sure you are following the guidance given by your coaches and are asking questions. As Coach Lind likes to say "Distance running will be the hardest thing you will ever do." However, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences you will have if you follow the sound advice of our coaching staff.
Training Tips - For those of you new to the sport (even a reminder to veteran runners), here are some tips below to keep in mind as you run:
1 - Always start off slow. The jog to the warmup place is slow to allow the body to ease into the workout.
2 - "Running Tall" is the term we like to use to keep you running efficiently. Head level, shoulders back, chest out, fingers/hands relaxed. Pretend there is a cable attached to your head lifting you off the ground as you run.
3 - Quality Workouts - When we start these type of workouts with more intensity, one of the most important factors in completing the workout is pace. We also use the term "delaying O2 debt", meaning you are running faster than oxygen can be supplied to muscle tissue. You want to make sure you pushing yourself and also can continue at the pace required for a solid workout or race.
